Studio Notes: Sunny Norfolk mornings, House Beautiful & a new festive bloom

Pamela Haining

September in Norfolk is currently glorious! We were blessed with a crisp, sunny morning today, the kind that pulled me outdoors for a gentle run before stepping into the studio. Running along the quiet country lanes has become a habit to force myself to slow down, let go and be present.

As the seasons shift, I love watching the hedgerows gradually change, noticing which summer blooms are fading and making way for the rich, earthy tones of autumn. It’s a subtle reminder that nature never rushes, yet everything gets done in the end.

Studio News: House Beautiful UK

I opened the latest issue of House Beautiful UK magazine to find Adventures in Print featured as their 'One to Watch'! Seeing my work and story shared in print is such a quiet honour.

The feature talks about my path from corporate operations to creating here in Norfolk, as well as my dual process of combining the traditional, tactile textures of hand-carved linocuts with contemporary digital colour palettes to bring my botanical portraits to life. I’m very grateful to the team at House Beautiful for celebrating slow craft and independent art.

First Look: Festive Poinsettia

Speaking of seasonal shifts, my latest design for the upcoming festive season is ready in the studio! I know September feels a little early to talk about winter, but as autumn draws closer, I always find a quiet comfort in preparing gently and early. It’s one small thing ticked off the list before the end-of-year rush even begins.

Festive Poinsettia garland card; my Christmas card for 2026, created using that same dual approach of hand-carved linocut with bold lines and modern colour. I wanted to capture the striking, confident shape of this traditional Christmas favourite while keeping the warm, nostalgic feeling that makes sending snail mail so special.

Because you're part of this quiet newsletter community, you're getting the very first look before I share on socials.

🎧As the Season Turns by Ffern (Episode: 'September') It's a favourite, slow-listen, podcast I enjoy listening to in the studio. This month’s episode takes you to a wind-swept shingle beach surrounded by wild fennel, shimmering mackerel, and fading skies. It’s an evocative, beautifully produced listen about shifting seasons and listening out for nature's quiet stories.
