Sunrise Flower Block Print

Sunrise Flower Block Print

Pamela Haining

Schools are back this week after the half-term holidays and I’m ready to get printing. The weather has been slowly improving, the days feel longer and the sun is slowly warming up life outdoors. I feel like we’re almost shaking off that winter slumber. Our tulip bulbs are making their presence known and have almost erupted out of their planter, no flowers yet of course, just leaves, but I can’t wait for the riot of colour in the coming spring and summer months.

I carved this square floral design using Essdee Mastercut lino and went on to separate the flower section from the leaves, to create a jigsaw block. I wanted to create something that was simplistic in design yet a block I could easily combine two pleasing colour combinations. The floral part of this block reminds me of a sunrise, coming out over the tops of gentle rolling hills.

I’m a big fan of this week’s block print, perhaps it’s the dreamy pastel pink and lilac colour combination or the geometric style, which is easily repeated by hand.
